THE TEXAS QUEST HAS BEEN CANCELED!!!

As the forest service closed the trails in the Sam Houston National Forest the last day of March.  We just did not have the time or plans to map out a new course somewhere else. Refunds are in the works.

However we will put on a free unofficial " practice race" on Cypress Creek at Cypresswood Dr. Saturday morning. Please check out facebook page for the details as they will be going up soon.
The race on Cypress Creek will have a 3 hour flagged run, paddle, bike then 3 hours of navigation trek, bike, and paddle. For those training for an multi day race a suggested extra 10 hour route will be provide. This " practice race" will have no support - so bring you own water, food and safety gear. Hope you choose to join us.  Come do as much or as little of this course as you like and let me know if you would like to see a real race here in the future.

Adventure Racing (often referred to as "AR") is a multi-sport team activity usually involving trail running, mountain biking, paddling and orienteering. Adventure Races often include other "Mystery Events" that are unveiled mid-race. Adventure Racing is meant to test participants both physically and mentally in multiple activities over varied lengths of time – from a few hours to many days. Adventure Racing Teams usually consist of two, three or four members whether male, female or coed. Unlike other endurance sports, teamwork plays an important role as Adventure Racing team members must travel together at all times throughout the race. Team dynamics often affect the performance of each team.

Doubled Double Lake - the trails!
The Double Lake Trails have recently been  Doubled with 10.5 miles of more fun being added.  The loop is fast and stretches  S.S.E.  along the western side of a ridge then wonders back on the east side. Much of the forest is open at the moment having been recently managed by fire  which makes for some nice vistas. It looks like it will be a great all weather trail or a quick dry trail as it is over mostly hard packed sandy soils.            Last Saturday was one of those ideal days of the year for being out in the woods with cool air and warm sun. We took advantage of it to do some early course scouting for the upcoming  TEXAS QUEST and TEXAS NAV.   Having a good time dreaming up an exciting race as The Texas Adventure Race course designer(s). We will be up there mapping out a fun and enjoyable couple of races hope to see you all in the woods.
The new trail maps for double lake are up  http://www.ghorba.org/maps/DL_Map_Dec_2010.pdf . The new trail is a great addition for our races as it opens up a lot new area so take advantage of the next break in the weather and enjoy.
*The date for the TEXAS NAV has been moved up to February 26th. The NAV a great way to prepare for THE QUEST March 26th.

Make this count - pace counting.

Register NOW for NAV Texas / Texas NAV - whatever I am calling it today. :)https://www.signmeup.com/site/online-event-registration/73867

NAV TEXAS - both the Clinic and Race anyone that signs up before the February 5th will get pace counting beads. You could spend 10 bucks for these shipping and all if bought on line - but free at NAV TEXAS!  :)

Pace counting beads have come in handy for me on long treks or in the wee hours of the night. Nothing like having your pace counter lose count at 1,400 meters and say "I don't know how far we have gone" :) better to have back up and know how far you have come.  This did happen one race and I had two team members pace counting yet both lost count - ouch.  It was 4am and 20 hours into a 24 hour race so somewhat understandable but never again.

Sign up NOW and the finely crafted beads are yours as well as a fun race. The race will put a polish on your navigations skills and I can guarantee these beads were not made by children in a third world country but rather by me and my minions while watching wipe out - got to get ideas for the race somewhere. :) "BUT WAIT - don't  answer yet because if you act NOW we will also thrown in a super 4 scale U.T.M. for FREE a $7.50 value!! This is a limited time offer not found in just any or all stores but rest assured it is offer here and now until it is not."  ( said in my best TV infomercial voice )

UTMs made possible by out fine sponsor - MAD Athlete http://madathlete.com/   Only for those who sign up for the Clinic or Nav Texas before February 5th.

Two races - sign up for both today

NAV TEXAS / TEXAS NAV clinic & race Feb 26th

While you are recovering from the cold -

Take the time to flyover Double Lake - really! What better way to warm up and get ready for the next race than study the area for NAV Texas and TEXAS Quest by plane. Not many people know that Google Earth has a "flight simulator" mode and it is a lot of fun.   http://www.google.com/earth/index.html

Once in Google Earth and over The Double lake recreation area click on tools and scroll down to "enter Flight Simulator" pick your plane and off you go.  You have the option of a prop plane or a Jet. Fly the prop as you get more time to study the area before you have to loop back around.  T.A. will be on the Eastern end of the dam again this year. Hope everyone who raced this weekend  is not too chilled. If you were too chilled when you defrost use your once frozen fingers to sign up for NAV TEXAS and upcoming TEXAS QUEST.

Canoes are limited for the Quest once rental is maxed out they will come off the registration page so signup and lock one down NOW.

Attached it a PDF file with a Texas Adventure Racing flyer as a number of you have asked for one to help spread the word. We really would like the sport to continue its growth as it is doing. The more we have at a race the more we can add to the race in the way of fun and excitement. Perhaps with your friends joining us the prizes can go a little deeper in the ranking.  Let me know your thoughts and get your team, coworkers, and neighbors on board with Texas Adventure Racing!. :)

Feel free to post these at work, or workout, bike shop or bible study, You know your coworkers will see you in a different light and think you a bad ass :) when they find out what you have been up to on the weekends.

Sign up Now!

Sincerely,

Houston Orienteering racers are starting to find Texas Adventure Racing  a good addition to their race options.  While Adventure racing is more involved requiring additional time and equipment, at its hart adventure racing is orienteering.  For that matter orienteering is almost always an adventure. The typical orienteering racer has all the navigation skills needed to race successfully in A.R. needing only to master the bike and paddle equipment to be a force to be contended with on race day.
Orienteering meets are very similar to an adventure race using the sunto check points and punches. The orienteering event might be a little more intense as the duration is usually similar to an adventure races sprint.
The use of 1 to 24,000 scale UTM maps and UTM plotters will make any orienteer racer feel at home at the race.
Geocaching is just a few degrees off from the Adventure race as well in its most basic elements.  That is having fun finding a place a point a check point. The geocacher has more to learn and additional skills to acquire to become an adventure racer than someone who is orienteering.  If fact if a GPS unit was used during an adventure race it would be cheating.  However someone familiar with and enjoying geocaching just might find adventure racing the next logical step in outdoor fun.
So if you are orienteering in Texas or geocaching in Texas then check out and enjoy adventure racing in Texas. You will find an orienteering meet and an Adventure race very similar.

TEXAS QUEST - a good paddling is sometimes required.

The limited number of Canoes we have are mostly gone with a few left so signup and reserve one today.  If you miss out there are a number of places to rent them on your own like R.E.I. but having one there and ready for you would just make race day that much more fun. :)  Once they are rented they are rented -  no warning just gone.

For the Sprint leg the paddling will be held on the Double lake lake. Which with the lack of rain as of late might just add a Muddy Buddy like quality to this ever fun and exciting frolic in the woods.  Just saying you never know when it comes to an adventure race.I am liking what we have in store for the sprint, 6 and 12 hour races hop on in the water is fine a good paddling is awaiting all.

The TEXAS QUEST - close to home for most Double Lake Recreation Area has 10 plus miles of new mountain bike trails. for a total of 22 plus  of super fast single track, and countless miles of logging roads.

P.S. I have had a lot of fun setting this course up and I think you will have as much or more on race day. Rain or shine muddy or clear fast or slow don't we will be happy when you show
